About Texas State University-San Marcos

Texas State University-San Marcos, also known as Texas State University or Texas State, is a doctoral-granting university located in San Marcos, which is the seat of Hays County, in the US state of Texas, situated within the Austin–Round Rock–San Marcos metropolitan area, with a population estimated at a number of more than 50 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. In the 2010 edition of Business Week, San Marcos has been placed among the "Best Places to Raise your Kids''.


Texas State's history began with the bill proposed by Fred Cocke, representing the 98th Texas House District, in March, 1899, to establish Southwest Texas State Normal School in San Marcos, the bill being approved and signed by Governor Joseph D. Sayers on May 10, 1899. Since its founding, the university has had various names, which are the following: Southwest Texas State Normal School (1903–1918), Southwest Texas State Normal College (1918–1923), Southwest Texas State Teachers College (1923–1959), Southwest Texas State College (1959–1969), Southwest Texas State University (1969–2003) and Texas State University–San Marcos, which has been adopted since 2003.


Today, Texas State is 5th largest university in the state and the largest institution in the Texas State University System, also being one of the 55 largest universities in USA. For the vast array of Master's degrees offered, the university has been named by U.S. News & World Report a Master's University, the same publication placing it among Best Colleges 2010, the institution also being ranked 12th Best Public University in the West and deemed a Tier One Master's institution. Overall, Texas State offers its students 111 undergraduate and 86 masters degrees, including nine doctorate degrees in the areas of Criminal Justice, Aquatic Resources, Geography, Education, and Physical Therapy.


Athletics

Texas State's athletic teams are known as the Texas State Bobcats, who compete in Division I athletics, with the football team currently competing in Division I-FCS and contesting in the Southland Conference. The Bobcats have 14 teams, for both men and women, who compete in sports areas such as basketball, baseball, golf, tennis, soccer and volleyball, among several other. They have experienced victory in many of their sports, over the years, including in football, in which they won two Southland Conference championships in 2005 and 2008, two Division II national championships in 1981 and 1982, and eight Lone Star Conference titles between 1948 and 1983, and basketball, in which they won 11 regular season conference titles since 1950, nine Lone Star Conference and two Southland Conference, to name a few of their most notable achievements.
